Mother’s Day

May 6, 2015

Maybe I should be embarrassed to admit it (but I'm not)... Mother's Day is pretty much my favorite day of the year.  I LOVE Mother's Day.  I love all holidays, but let's face it, most holidays involve a lot of fun and a lot of work for mom.  Don't get me wrong, it's worth it!  I love creating memories for my kids... but magic doesn't just "happen" people! UNLESS it's Mother's Day.  On Mother's ... read more

Service With a Smile

April 30, 2015

One of the things I really love about our school, is that we give our students love of opportunities to serve others.  Some of our most popular school-wide activities include an annual canned food drive and a collection for a group foster care facility in our neighborhood.  Each year we collect change several times a year to benefit the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society and the Make a Wish ... read more

Earth Day!

April 19, 2015

I am really excited about Earth Day this year!  I always enjoy helping my students realize all the ways they can help the earth but this year is especially exciting!  I really couldn't wait until the end of the month for all this earthy goodness.  We began talking about conservation and nature as soon as we came back from Spring Break.  So, I am a little ahead of the game (for once!). This is ... read more

American Symbols and Citizenship

February 11, 2015

We are deep into our study  of American symbols and citizenship.  I will be the first to admit, when I saw the outline of what our district wanted us to cover in this unit I was a little stressed... which seems so silly now!  We are having so much fun learning about our country.  As usual, they are amazing me with their potential to learn complex concepts.  They are so naturally curious... as long ... read more

Veterans Day

November 5, 2014

Today we started one of my favorite themes of the year... Veterans Day.  I LOVE teaching students about this holiday.  Sometimes people think it sounds strange when I say this is one of my favorite things to teach young students about but it is true! I always start teaching about Veterans Day the day after Halloween.  You know that day, right?  The day when all the kids come in totally ... read more

Gone Batty!

October 13, 2014

This week my classroom was BATTY and it wasn't just the full moon!  We had so much fun studying bats this week.  We all know that the curriculum is very demanding these days and if we want our kids to have fun and act like 6 year olds we need to make it happen! So, this week we pushed our study of bats into science (they are living things), math (measuring, comparing and adding), and Language Arts ... read more

Focus Wall

September 1, 2014

I feel like the walls in my classroom are prime real estate.  My little firsties spend six hours every single day surrounded by these walls!  That is HUGE.  I try to make sure that everything in our room is engaging, meaningful, and educationally relevant for my students. For the past few years I have felt conflicted about posting standards in my room.  I was teaching kindergarten when it was ... read more

New Year, New Blog And a Tour

September 1, 2014

I have spent the last three months trying to come up with the first sentence for this blog.  I guess that was it... kind of anticlimactic, huh?  The self inflicted pressure of "how to start" has been very stressful.  It has also been kind of ridiculous.  I certainly never have a shortage of things to say!  (My 2 year old told me I am a "chatterbox".  She is ... read more
