The Easiest Way to Teach the Difference Between b and d

Every now and then we all stumble onto “teacher gold”.  You know what I mean… the simple, no prep little things that make our lives soooooo much easier.  The little tips and tricks that feel life changing.

This is one of those tips.

First, let me back up for just a second.

I am really going to try to make this a regular thing… sharing tips and tricks.  I am planning to bring lots of quick little posts and freebies your way over the next few weeks (hopefully weeks, months & more!  But for now we’ll say weeks ?).  I am going to be actively looking for ways to bring the “little things” that make life easier straight to you.  Because who doesn’t love easier, right?

I’m sure some of the tips will be better than others… but hopefully they will all be easy and actionable.  They won’t require any “work” on your part.  The goal will be to alleviate the work.  To give you more time for the stuff that matters. (This will not be “Operation Busy Work”.  Pinkie Promise.)

Okay… On to today’s tip…

Now, if you teach little guys, you know the 8 & under crowd, I’m sure you have students that have trouble distinguishing between ‘b’ and ‘d’.  The struggle is real, am I right?

Well, over the years I have tried all the tricks.  Some have worked better than others, but none of them have ever really been the answer for my students until I stumbled upon this little piece of magic.

Now, it is ridiculous.

Actually, I should go ahead and warn you now that a lot of my tricks tend to be ridiculous.  (That seems to be a theme with me.)  But I have found that the more ridiculous an idea is the more the 8 and under crowd tends to adore it.  So…

Without further ado, I present to you…

Here’s the deal…

This tip tends to work best with students who are already familiar with the letters b & d and the sounds they make.  This is for the kiddos that just keep mixing them up even after they’ve learned about the letters and sounds.

To help them distinguish between the two letters I have them put their hands down in front of them and make the b & d shape with their hands.

Then, I simply have them look down at their “letters” and go from left to right while saying “b-b-baby, d-d-diapers”.  (Genius.  I know.)

Here’s the thing.  They think it is hilarious. Like the funniest thing they have ever heard in their little lives.

Which means they remember it.

I’m telling you, it is magical.

And since they always have their hands with them, they are able to use this technique anytime, anywhere.

The only trick is getting them to remember to do it.  That’s why I created this hilarious poster pack of babies in diapers that I post around my classroom. ?  And I’m sharing it with YOU for FREE!  I’ve included a variety of babies (for extra hilarity) and a variety of fonts (for extra exposure to print).
